Bankole Thompson, the editor-in-chief of The PuLSE Institute, Detroit’s anti-poverty think tank, has been invited to teach a one-week leadership seminar at Lawrence Technological University in Southfield.
The title of the seminar “Leadership in Action,” which will be held in July will focus on the various dimensions of leadership and how emerging leaders can be effective leaders as well as shape public opinion. Too often individuals who are seeking to be leaders of organizations are forced to learn quickly to be become difference makers. The seminar will examine strategic thinking and building professional and personal networks that are essential to the success of emerging leaders. The seminar will help students gain critical insight into how to master the skills that are essential to the needs of running a successful organization as well as the kinds of strategies to apply.
Thompson has written extensively about the dimensions of leadership and how to influence social change. He has interviewed world leaders and some of the leading influencers of the human sphere including former President Barack Obama, Nobel Laureate Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Rev Jesse Jackson and billionaire investor Warren Buffett. Thompson is an opinion columnist at The Detroit News where he writes a twice-a-week column on politics and culture on Mondays and Thursdays. He is also a contributor for the British newspaper, The Guardian, where his articles have focused on politics and the economy.
In recognition of his journalistic contributions and leadership, the University of Michigan Bentley Historical Library, one of the leading depositories in the world, four years ago established the “Bankole Thompson Papers” a comprehensive physical and digital collection to preserve Thompson’s work for students and scholars.
In a 2015 letter proposing the creation of the collection for Thompson, UM Bentley Library, which houses the papers of every Michigan governor underscored the work and influence of the journalist.
“We are interested in preserving your work, as a most important journalist, observer, author, and observer of Detroit and Michigan. Your work has been important to the overall history of the recent past and current affairs. We would like to collect your records and preserve them at the Bentley Historical Library for our researchers, scholars, students, and whoever comes to study the history of the city and state,” UM Bentley Historical Library wrote to Thompson. “You are an important part of Detroit and Michigan History. I hope you will consider the Bentley Historical Library as the home for your collection. Your work is significant and should be properly preserved for future researchers and scholars.”
Thompson has addressed many diverse institutions around the nation and has received many professional and community awards.
